Coat of Arms

The coat of arms of Portugal is the main heraldic insignia of Portugal. The present model was officially adopted on 30 June 1911, along with the present model of the Flag of Portugal. It is based on the coat of arms used by the Kingdom of Portugal since the Middle Ages. The coat of arms of Portugal is popularly referred as the Quinas (a quina being a group of five things) The present model of the coat of arms of Portugal was designed by the painter Columbano, member of the commission appointed on the 15 October 1910 to present the project for a new National Flag, following the establishing of the Portuguese republic on the 5 October 1910. The models chosen by the commission were approved by the Provisional Government of the Republic on the 29 November 1910, confirmed by the Constituent Assembly through the decree of 19 June 1911, with its details being specified in the Diário do Governo (official journal) no 150 of 30 June 1911.

Wanderings in...

Some of the images were taken on my "Grand Tour of Europe" between January and April of 2012, before the world was due to come to an end that December. Luckily for us all, it did not happen and we are still here in 2024. Others are from a second trip to the Algarve in October 2015.
The Algarve is the only region of Portugal that I have visited. Unfortunately, I have never made it to any other parts. My bad!
Sadly, now that we have left the EU, travelling about Europe is more troublesome than it used to be.

ALBUFEIRA

I have made two visits to Albufeira. The first in 2012, on my 'Grand Tour of Europe' and the other in October 2015 while staying in Quarteira.

SILVES

A short visit to Silves just to see the castle.
I jumped off the train on the journey from Quarteira to Lagos in the October of 2015. It is about a 4 Kilometer walk from the train station to the town.

LAGOS

A short stay in Lagos for a couple of days with a trip to the Farol do Cabo de São Vicente (Cape St Vincent Lighthouse) in October 2015.

QUARTEIRA

A month of relaxation in Quarteira with visits to Albufeira, Silves, Lagos and Cape St Vincent during October 2015.
